For most casual players, one badminton racket will serve as well as the next. But if you're looking to improve your game or just gain a slight badminton equipment advantage over the in-laws at your next family tournament, here are some tips you can follow when shopping for a new Yonex badminton racket.

Choosing Appropriate Badminton Rackets
Most badminton rackets (or badminton racquets, if you prefer the alternative spelling) are made from carbon fiber or graphite. A Yonex badminton racket is much lighter and thinner than a tennis racket. The heads of badminton rackets can be either oval or isometric/square.

There are four main points to consider when comparing badminton racquets: string tension, grip, racket balance, and racket weight.

  • String tension
    String tension is an aspect of badminton equipment to which few but the most committed players will pay attention. However, it can have a significant impact on your game. Players who can hit the badminton shuttlecock with both power and accuracy play best when using Halex badminton rackets with higher string tensions. Badminton rackets with low string tensions provide more power and accuracy to lighter, inexperienced hitters. Beginners should use badminton racquets with string tensions around 19 or 20 pounds (advanced players play at 25 pounds or higher).
  • Grip

  • Badminton Racket Balance

Flexible badminton rackets with an even balance between head and handle permit faster, more flexible play. Power hitters will prefer badminton rackets that are "head balanced," as the extra top weight provides greater swing momentum.
  • Badminton Racket Weight
    As with large badminton racket grips, a heavier badminton racket will feel more secure in your hand. Heavier badminton rackets also give stability to a beginning player's swing. The lighter the badminton racket, the more maneuverable it becomes. Lighter badminton rackets require more powerful and accurate play, so start heavy, and lighten your racket as your game improves.
