Badminton Techniques

When played at its peak, badminton is a lightning fast sport. Anticipation and instinct are key strengths of those who know how to play badminton well, because there's seldom time to recall proper badminton techniques and act accordingly. The deeper these badminton techniques are ingrained in your mind, the faster and better your play will be.

Badminton Footwork

Contrary to what most beginners think, footwork is the most important part of how to play badminton. A quick and nimble player who consistently reaches the shuttlecock is going to have a better chance of winning. A good pair of badminton shoes is essential. Never become flat footed. Choose a base area on the court that's suitable for your speed and style of play, and try to return to it as often as possible. This will give you a wider return range than if you let your position be dictated solely by the course of play.

Badminton Grip

Using a proper badminton grip is a simple way to improve the power and accuracy of your shots. There are two basic badminton racket grips: the forehand grip and the backhand grip.

The forehand grip resembles a handshake. The lines of your thumb and index finger should form a V when viewed from above. The badminton racket should rest in your fingers rather than your palm, and your wrist should be loose, not tense.

The backhand grip is like turning off your car alarm with your thumb. Your thumb should be aligned with the handle and higher up than your index finger, which is curled and pointing down with your other fingers.

Feather Shuttlecocks - 3 PKBadminton Shots

There are many different types of shots in badminton. General badminton shot types include badminton serves, badminton clears, badminton drop shots, badminton drives, and the badminton smash.

Badminton serves include the high serve, low/short serve, flick serve, and drive serve. Varying your serve types will keep your opponents "honest." Badminton clears can be offensive or defensive. They're primarily intended to make your opponent react to the badminton shuttlecock and give you time to strengthen your court position. Badminton clears can be forehand or backhand, overhead or underarm.

Badminton drop shots are delicate stealth plays that are hit lightly but disguised as stronger shots. Badminton drives are strong horizontal attacking shots designed to put your opponent off balance. But the ultimate attack shot is the badminton smash. The badminton smash is hit downward with maximum force and requires excellent form and accuracy.
