Backcourt: The backcourt refers to the back third of the badminton court. Center Line: All badminton courts are divided into two halves by a centerline, which runs perpendicular to the net. Forecourt: The area between the net and the short service line is the forecourt. Service Court: Despite the fact that it differs for singles and doubles, the service court is the area where the server must be positioned in order to serve. Short Service Line: Serves must reach this line, which is located approximately 6.5 feet from the net, to be legal. There also is a long service line, which is used for doubles. Drop: Hitting the shuttlecock softly, but with enough speed to cause it to land close to the net on the opponent's side is called a drop. Net Shot: A badminton net shot is similar to a drop shot, but is hit from the forecourt and barely clears the net before landing on the opponent's side. Smash: This is one of the most commonly used badminton terms. It refers to when a player uses an overhead shot to force the badminton shuttlecock downward. |
