Important badminton terms to know

In a sense, learning a new sport involves learning a new language. Sometimes it can be overwhelming trying to keep the terminology straight. This collection of popular badminton terms can help eliminate some of the confusion.

When it comes to the court

There are several badminton terms that are used to refer to areas of the court. Here are just a few.

SportCraft Gold Combination Set

Backcourt: The backcourt refers to the back third of the badminton court.

Center Line: All badminton courts are divided into two halves by a centerline, which runs perpendicular to the net.

Forecourt: The area between the net and the short service line is the forecourt.

Service Court: Despite the fact that it differs for singles and doubles, the service court is the area where the server must be positioned in order to serve.

Short Service Line: Serves must reach this line, which is located approximately 6.5 feet from the net, to be legal. There also is a long service line, which is used for doubles.

You've got the moves

Here are several different badminton terms that describe special moves or strokes.

Balk: Also known as a feint, a balk is one of the badminton terms used to describe any move that is intentionally deceptive or distractive to the server.

Carry: This is when the badminton shuttlecock is caught by the Badminton racket and briefly held before executing the stroke. You also might hear the badminton terms 'sling' or 'throw' to describe this illegal act.

Drop: Hitting the shuttlecock softly, but with enough speed to cause it to land close to the net on the opponent's side is called a drop.

Net Shot: A badminton net shot is similar to a drop shot, but is hit from the forecourt and barely clears the net before landing on the opponent's side.

Smash: This is one of the most commonly used badminton terms. It refers to when a player uses an overhead shot to force the badminton shuttlecock downward.
